I have always had a fascination with industrial archeology. I love old factories, bridges, power stations, anything industrial. I came across mines accidentally. I didn’t even know there were mines in NJ. Years ago I had an interest in the Morris Canal, upon exploring the remains of an inclined plane in Ledgewood I came across the High Ledge mine. After that I was hooked. At first I would just take pictures of the entrance. But after some time my curiosity got the better of me. Through books from the state, I started to search for every mine in Morris county. The first mine I entered I thought I was crazy for doing it. But to be a mine is a time capsule. As condos and shopping malls sprout up all around, down below things are still pristine. Going into a mine for me is like walking back in time and getting a glipse of the past. One day a friend of mine told me about a website that had the same interest that I had. This is how I first met Dan. I emailed him to let him know I had the same passion for mines as him. Since then our friendship has grown and what started off as two people crawling into mines to photograph them, has turned into the organization you see today. I love the challenge of “the hunt”. I love the investigation and locating the mine whether it is a giant tunnel or just a water filled shaft. I get satisfaction out of finding them. I also love the repelling and hiking aspects of what we do. When the group goes into a mine I think of myself as the mother hen. I am always watching over the rest of the group. I am serious when it comes to safety and the well being of the group. I am a certified EMT and also belong to a Search and Rescue group . I make sure we leave the mine the same way we entered.
