I have always been interested in heavy industry and transportation, From Mines, Canals, Forges, and especially Railroads. I also love history, hiking and exploring the woods of NJ. If I hear about an old historic site out in the woods or an abandoned rail line, I have to go out and find it before I can rest. I don’t remember when this all started but it’s been this way since I was a kid. I remember back when I was 4-5 years old my father teaching me that if you smashed rocks with a hammer into tiny pieces, you could pass a magnet over and pick out the Iron. I did this out near the street for years when I was young. To learn this was basically the same thing Thomas Edison did on Sparta Mtn. all those years ago was pretty cool. I also remember standing along the Erie Lackawanna Railroad mesmerized watching the freight trains pass through Denville, Boonton, and Newark back in the 1970′s. My first time exploring around mines was in the late 80′s when the Hibernia mines were being capped and destroyed by the state. Hibernia tunnel had a steel wall with a door covering it and the door was open. We only went in a few yards without flashlights though. Later that wall came down and it was totally open for a short time.
Although I have never been deep in a mine like the others here, I am still fascinated by them and I’m sure I will be down in one someday.
My other hobby’s include Guitar playing, Quad riding, 4 Wheeling, and riding my Harley. I work as an Auto Tech.
